So, while the newest Cats movie looks, from all available evidence, like the most mesmerizing trainwreck, we at least got a new Lloyd-Webber composition out of it. And, surprisingly, Taylor Swift and Lloyd-Webber made a good lyrics/composition combo indeed.
The melody, I thought, was fucking glorious. And the lyrics had shiver-inducing depth. But! oh, the but loomed large.
Being a finicky sort, and much more accustomed to Lloyd-Webber's melodies underlaying vocalists with a bit more range and vibrato than Swift's--she's still an excellent pop-singer!; just a little unsuited, imho, to the complexities of musical theater--sighed forlornly. And then started plotting.
It ended with my lobbying my bff to put her powerhouse, decade-and-more trained chops, behind giving us all the rendition we all deserve.
Since she, too, is a Lloyd-Webber geek, she indulged me, and this magnificence is out in the world:
And if that catches your fancy, I can't rec the entirety of her cover catalogue enough.
