Holy shit it's so good!!!! I'd never heard it till today, and I just had goosebumps; you developed some damn fine taste young.
It's been interesting cause Mom had music unlimited on Amazon, and it was a perk I got to take advantage of, briefly. And now we're in this in-between lull where stepdad doesn't want music unlimited, but I haven't quite got finances sorted to pay. So instead of getting to pick my songs, I'm just having to do the play similar music to this thing. And I'll give Amazon this, for all their flaws; they have one of the hands-down best algorithms to queue up precisely! the music that'll hit my buttons; I'm hearing more of the coolest shit in the last week than I've heard in a while.
I have the advantage here of having been around when the song first came out. A little too young to remember it on first release, but my parents had the cassette tape, and since you couldn't pick up much on the radio where we lived when I was small, the same bag full of tapes got frequent play in the car. Waylon Jennings' verse - the dambuilder - was always my favourite, but I didn't get to hear more of his music until I was much older. My mother had a lot of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson around, but no Waylon for some reason.
Isn't it great when an algorithm actually steers you right? There's a lot I like fine about Spotify, but it really doesn't seem to know what to make of me.
I love this song! This version of it, specifically, both in its own right and for nostalgia reasons (it's one of the prominent background soundtracks to my memories of the Rocky Mountains).
